NFL Survivor Pool 2007

It’s that time of the year! Training camps for most NFL teams commence next week, so it’s a good time to start thinking about football again!

As many of you know, I’ve been running an annual NFL Survivor Pool since 2002. This will be the sixth year!

WHAT IS A SURVIVOR POOL?

For those of you that don’t know what a Survivor Pool is, another common name for it is a Suicide Pool.

The basic concept is that each week, you pick one NFL team to win their game that week (a tie is considered a loss since you’re picking a team to win — it’s happened once in the last five years). If your team wins, you move on. If your team loses, you’re out. The catch is that you can only pick each team once.

You can get the full rules on the pool’s website (see below).

You can enter up to five times, with each entry considered a distinctly seperate player. Each entry is $10. (So far, noone’s ever entered more than three times, including myself, but I think I’m going to try four this year. You can see the results of past years on the website as well.)

If you lose during weeks 1 through 5, you have the option of “buying back” into the game for $15. Each entry has the option of buying back once. Buy backs are discontinued starting with week 6. I know buy backs are unpopular with some folks, but it also has the effects of increasing the pot size as well as prolonging the game if there are a lot of upsets at the beginning of the season.

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR

Nothing much. Same rules as last year, I didn’t feel like I needed to make any changes. We had multiple winners at the end of the 2005 season, but only a single winner at the end of the other four years.

However, as was last year, due to the NFL’s goofy scheduling, the deadlines to get picks in are a little complicated. See the full rules on the website for all of the deadlines (see below).

HOW TO ENTER

Each entry is $10. You must get the entry fees to me by no later than 10am on Sunday, September 9th. If you wish to pick a team playing in the Thursday night season opener on September 6, I must receive it by Thursday at 5pm.

I highly prefer PayPal for payment. There have been some issues in past years where checks sent via snail mail have been late in getting to me. There is no surcharge for personal accounts on PayPal, with funds drawn from a checking account. I will not accept credit card payments.

If you must send a check, please make sure you contact me at least a couple weeks prior to the start of the season to allow for adequate time for snail mail to work their magic (or lack thereof).

If you wish to enter this year, please email me at bill (at) themafamily (dot) net. To make sure that you get past any spam filters, please include any of these words in the subject: NFL Survivor Pool

FINAL THOUGHTS

I try to keep the website updated as much as I can, so please check there for the latest info. The website for the pool is http://www.billanddiane.com/nflpool/

Whenever I can, I will turn over everyone’s picks after I receive all of them or as soon as I can after 10am on gameday. However, we do plan on attending four Penn State football home games this year, so during home game weekends, I will not get home until mid to late afternoon, so you may not see the picks turned over until then.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone else that might be interested.

  1. Hello Bill,

I stumbled across your site when looking for a host. Your football pool graphics rock! Do you use one? I am considering runyourpool.com. Any thoughts? John

  2. I host my own pool, I wrote the software for it a few years back when I first starting doing it on a website.
